About Community Energy
The wind, sun, tides, waves, and the earth are common resources. We can touch and see these resources near our own homes and communities. Community energy is about making sure that the benefits of energy harvested from these resources are enjoyed by the folks who live near by. There are plenty examples of the success and benefits of community energy world wide. Denmark and Germany have been trailblazers in this regard.
Energy is in demand and as global energy prices rise, the pressure to develop renewable resources will mount. We need to ensure that people have a say in how these resources are developed. There is no reason that the wealth generated by energy production should not be enjoyed by the people that live nearby. Nova Scotia stands at a crossroads, poised to develop its abundant renewable energy resources. The province needs to ensure that local economies benefit from the coming energy development. People can help ensure local input and local ownership by standing up and participating in community wind field activities.
Nova Scotia has developed a unique program that supports community ownership it its Community Economic Development Investment Fund (CEDIF). The CEDIF offers a convenient vehicle for Nova Scotians to invest in a common pool for sharing in the wealth that renewable energy provides. The community wind fields of the Scotian WindField family are designed to cover the province and allow local input and local ownership of energy projects. Individuals can participate by investing directly in a local wind field or serving as a volunteer director.
