Self Assessment Tools
1) The ability to install solar panels that have good access to sunlight is essential for using solar energy to preheat domestic hot water. To determine the solar access at your home or business determine the following:
a. Where is Due South in relation to my home?
b. What type of roof to I have ?
i. If I have a pitched roof, do I have a side that faces south?
c. Are there any trees or large buildings to the South of my home or business?
2) In order to size and design a system, we will need to know how you currently heat your domestic hot water.
a. Do I have an Electric, Oil or Propane heating Hot water storage tank?
i. If so, what size is it? (usually 40G or 60G in residential applications)
b. Do I get my domestic hot water from my space heating system? (IE, I line from my oil fired boiler?)
3) To install a solar thermal hot water system, an additional storage tank similar to one you already use is required.
a. Where is your current tank located? And is there room for a tank of similar side in the same location?
