How the Relationships Work
There are six community wind fields registered under the Community Economic Development Investment Fund (CEDIF) program of the Nova Scotia Department of Economic Development. They are:
There are six active community WindFields formed under the CEDIF initiative.
• The Bay Wind Field (Digby, Yarmouth and Annapolis)
• The Glooscap Wind Field (Kings, Hants East & West)
• Northumberland Wind Field (Pictou and Antigonish)
• Colchester-Cumberland Wind Field
• Sou’Wester Wind Field (Queens, Shelburne, Lunenburg)
• Chebucto Wind Field (Halifax Regional Municipality)
Under the regulations of the CEDIF program, these WindFields are governed by volunteer directors who are drawn from the counties named in their charter. The directors manage the funds raised through public offerings of their community corporation. The memorandums of association of each wind field may vary, but all are dedicated to a mandate to invest in renewable energy. The rules of the CEDIF program dictate that XX% of that investment must be directed into qualifying Nova Scotian corporations. In the past, finding qualified investment in renewable energy in Nova Scotia has sometimes been a challenge.
Since the formation of Scotian WindFields Inc in 2007, the community WindFields have enjoyed a new outlet for qualifying investments. As founding shareholders in Scotian WindFields Inc, the community WindFields hold seats on the Board of Directors of that corporation, thereby giving communities a direct say in the future of renewable energy development in this province.
