Nova Scotia's Energy Strategy

In November and December 2007, Nova Scotia’s Department of Energy initiated a round of public consultations to inform the production of a new Energy Strategy for the province.

Scotian WindFields was an active participant in those consultations and presented a written submission that outlines the roadmap to a 100 percent renewable energy solution.

You can download our submission here.

Highlights of our report include:

  • recommendations for renewable energy and climate change policies
  • public education strategies
  • market choice
  • storage solutions
  • grid upgrades and transmission strategy
  • full cost accounting evaluation of fuel alternatives

Sustainable Prosperity

On April 13, 2007 the Nova Scotia government adopted “An Act Respecting Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity”. With this Act, the government confirmed that “the long-term environmental and economic objective of the Province is to fully integrate environmental sustainability and economic prosperity.

To that end, Nova Scotia’s Renewed Energy Strategy and Climate Action Plan outlines two essential pillars that support the government’s vision:

  • 10 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions than 1990 levels by the year 2020
  • economic performance to the Canadian average or better

We believe that developing a robust renewable energy industry in Nova Scotia is the answer to these twin goals
of sustainability and prosperity.

The policy options we advocate are low-cost to no-cost to the government and to energy consumers. These options will enable the development of renewable energy and will result in “sustainable prosperity” for Nova Scotia.

Our submission to the Department of Energy proves that renewable energy:

  • is more cost effective than other options
  • ensures energy security
  • provides a route to economic prosperity
  • is essential to an environmentally sustainable energy infrastructure
